Comparison

# Aditum Data vs Litmus Edge

Litmus Edge is an edge-first platform: it runs at each site, connects directly to PLCs and machines through a large driver library, and can run analytics and AI models locally. Aditum Data puts a light read-only connector at the site and does the preparation, calculations, data health and dashboards centrally, so every site is compared on the same definition.

## Aditum Data and Litmus Edge at a glance

Litmus does a lot at each edge; Aditum Data keeps the edge light and makes the sites comparable centrally.

**Aditum Data and Litmus Edge side by side**

| | Aditum Data | Litmus Edge |
| --- | --- | --- |
| What it is | Industrial data pipelines and dashboards as a managed service: connect plant and business sources, prepare the data without code, deliver it to your platform or to live dashboards. | "Industrial Edge Data Platform for AI": connect industrial systems and run analytics and AI at the edge. ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/litmus-edge)) |
| Where it runs | Managed by Aditum Data in Frankfurt (EU); a small read-only edge connector at each site (Windows or Linux), outbound HTTPS on port 443 only. | Edge-first on a Docker-based runtime, with offline-first and air-gapped options, or as an industrial PC appliance. ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/litmus-edge), [docs](https://docs.litmus.io/litmusedge/resources/faqs)) |
| Plant connectivity | Edge connector for OPC UA, MQTT (Sparkplug B) and Modbus TCP; AVEVA PI (PI Web API) and GE Proficy; SQL databases, InfluxDB, warehouses, data lakes, Kafka, SAP OData and REST. See [connectors](https://aditumdata.com/connectors). | "250+ Drivers To Connect To Any OT Asset: PLCs/DCS, Robots, CNCs, Sensors, Historians, SCADA". ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/pricing)) |
| Historian | Not a historian. Reads your historian, or stores prepared data in the Aditum database (hosted PostgreSQL with TimescaleDB) or your own destination. | Not presented as a historian on its product pages. |
| Asset model and context | A reviewed plant graph per organisation: naming rules (ISA-5.1, KKS), OPC UA folders and MQTT topics become site, unit and equipment; P&IDs and 3D models link to time series after a person approves. | Litmus Unify (UNS) with "ISA-95-aligned hierarchy modeling" and namespace rules, sold as an add-on. ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/litmus-unify), [pricing](https://litmus.io/pricing)) |
| Calculations | f(x): no-code engineering calculations with unit checks on every step, nine equipment templates (LMTD, duty, OEE, specific energy and more), time-weighted averages. | "Visual no-code workflow builder" and "Built-in industrial KPIs". ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/litmus-edge)) |
| Data health and alerts | Incidents without setting up rules: failed runs, stale sources, stuck or silent tags, missed schedules, data received but not stored, offline connectors; email, Teams, Slack, webhooks, PagerDuty, Opsgenie. | "Alerts, Events + Triggers"; Edge Manager adds "Centralized alerting and event monitoring". ([pricing](https://litmus.io/pricing), [Litmus](https://litmus.io/litmus-edge-manager)) |
| Dashboards | Live dashboards, including from a plain-language request that a person approves; every number traces to its source tags. | An offline dashboard with stats about the OT assets. ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/pricing)) |
| AI | AI drafts pipelines, dashboards and formulas for approval; the platform calculates every number. Metadata only by default; an organisation can switch AI off. | "Local ML and AI inference runtimes", "LLM and SLM support". ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/litmus-edge)) |
| How it is sold | Per organisation, never per seat: a free self-serve start, a pilot, then a site subscription. Prices on request. | Site-based plans with a 14-day free trial. ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/pricing)) |

## Where Litmus Edge is the better choice

Litmus Edge is ahead of Aditum Data in these areas today.

- **Device drivers.** 250+ OT system types, directly to PLCs, CNCs and robots ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/pricing)). Aditum Data reads OPC UA, MQTT and Modbus TCP, and other devices through a gateway such as Kepware.
- **Fleet management** of many edge sites through Litmus Edge Manager ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/litmus-edge-manager)).
- **Air-gapped and offline-first** operation, with apps and AI models running at the edge ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/litmus-edge)).
- **Free trial with published plans** ([Litmus](https://litmus.io/pricing)).

## Where Aditum Data is different

What Aditum Data adds for teams that need the same, trustworthy number from every site.

- **Light footprint at the site.** One small read-only service per site, outbound HTTPS on port 443, configured centrally with no site visit.
- **Cross-site comparability.** One KPI definition, versioned, mapped to each site's own tags; boards copied between sites by rules.
- **Historians and business systems in the same pipeline:** AVEVA PI, GE Proficy, SQL databases, SAP OData.
- **Loud data health:** stuck tags, renamed tags, heartbeats without data and missed runs become incidents.
- **Engineering calculations** with unit checks, and P&IDs linked to live tags.

## Can Aditum Data work with Litmus Edge?

Yes. If Litmus publishes data to an MQTT broker, Aditum Data's edge connector can subscribe to it, and Aditum Data can publish prepared data back to MQTT.

## Questions

**Does Aditum Data talk to PLCs directly?**

Through Modbus TCP, OPC UA and MQTT. For proprietary PLC protocols, put an OPC UA gateway such as Kepware Server in between.
